Can't Buy Me Love Tab - Chet Atkins Arrangement
We will cover the Introduction and the first part or the Part A portion of the song in this lesson. In Part B or the second lesson in this series, we will cover the second and last half of the song.
Your first objective is to work of the effective brushing technique of the chords in the introduction. This is implemented with the Thumb of the Right Hand with a smooth, slow, brushing action over the strings.
Secondly you will note that there are single notes that follow the brushed chords. Try to keep your left hand fingers in place as you play these notes as well. Note only will this make the introduction easier to play, it will sound more free-flowing and smooth.
Rhythm Chords - Can't Buy Me Love
Look above the notation score for the rhythm chords for Can't Buy Me Love. When you form your chords with the left hand, be sure to refer to these forms as they contain many of the notes you will be playing in the melody.
Obviously, for those of you interested in only the rhythm chords, these will come in very handy. As with many finger-style songs, this arrangement uses the standard alternating bass for the majority of the lesson. This is accomplished with the thumb of the right hand.
Also, the lead or "melody" notes for the piece are picked with the index, middle and ring finger of the right hand. You should attempt to hold the left hand fingering for the chord forms wherever possible and only adjust fingering as needed to play certain melody notes.
By this you will be able to play the song much smoother and with a lot less effort as you achieve experience with this method of finger-style guitar. Just keep in mind that you should only deviate from the indicated chord diagrams with the left hand fingers when absolutely necessary.
The F Major Chord
The F chord requires some special attention in Part A. There are several fingering you can utilize to play the F Major chord. As you will see, the method that is used in this example utilizes the Thumb of the left hand in lieu of the barred index finger, which would press down all 6 strings.
You can choose as to which method works for you and which makes transitions easier to make and work on that system for your F chord.
Can't Buy Me Love - The Syncopated Notes
As with most of the arrangements by Chet Atkins and for most finger-style guitars for that matter, there is a fair amount of syncopation in the melody line. In using syncopation in the melody line, the notes are moved slightly out of their normal position in the score, which creates interest in the song.
Refer to the lesson materials. The location of the first syncopated note is after the Introduction, in the Part A portion of the TAB. To view this example, take a look at the music - the 7th measure in particular. It is the last note in the measure.
Ordinarily this note would be placed as the first note in the 8th measure, but to bring syncopation to the piece it is moved "backward" in the music by 1/2 beat to the 7th measure. You will more examples of this technique in not only this piece, but in many other finger-style TAB's.
