Ibiza and its clubbing scene history
The Balearic island of Ibiza lies just of the south coast of its mother country, Spain. Because of its Mediterranean Sea location, the island is a great place that many people choose for a summer holiday, but it is most popular for its world-famous clubbing scene.
The island's reputation as the world's leading clubbing destination started back in the 1960s, when hippies arrived to island to practise their new non-conformist and free-loving attitude. No doubt attracted to the island for its remote location and warm sunshine, ever since then Ibiza has become an island completely associated with letting loose to music.
Pacha was Ibiza's first club, and today is still home to the island's most popular dance floor. With Pacha branches all over the world, the name is now an international clubbing brand which has only helped enhance Ibiza's reputation as the world's most important clubbing destination. Every summer, Pacha puts on house, garage and dance sets from some of the leading DJs, including David Guetta, Basement Jaxx and Calvin Harris.
Over the following 2 decades, the island's clubbing scene grew and grew. Some notable additions include Space nightclub in 1989, Privilege (previously Ku) which has seen many changes since the 70s and is now the island's largest club, and Amnesia which although started as a nightclub in the 70s, really took off in 1996 when it became home to the island's biggest club night; Cream. It is also famous for its sunrise dance floor.
In recent years, the island's appeal has altered slightly in that it has become much more diverse musically. In 2005, the island hosted its first now annual Ibiza Rocks event, which brings indie and rock acts together with dance and drum and bass artists. So far we have seen the likes of Florence and the Machine, The Arctic Monkeys and The Kooks share the stage with legends such as The Prodigy, Fatboy Slim and Pendulum. Ibiza still remains, however, its title as the clubbing capital of the world.
