Paintings that capture the imagination of its audience are rare, but priceless. Landscape paintings fill one's mind with the wonder of nature. Ancient rituals surrounded by nature were depicted around 1500 B. C. By Minoan Greek frescoes.

Works like these, which depict nature in a rare moment, also depict other elements such as weather and animals. The deep blue sky is a common presence in this type of art. Without these characters, our perspectives may not allow us to see the true size and imagery.

Art in western medieval times included settings of gardens, usually canvassed on frescoes. Ancient Roman and Chinese art most commonly showed landscapes envisioned with waterfalls and mountains. The panoramic pictures usually included spectacular views of imaginary landscapes commonly associated with dreamlike images.

European expressionist art depicting distorted images of landscapes to convey emotion, has been around for quite some time. In the 1900s expressionists like Edvard Munch painted grandiose natural settings surrounded by angry humans. The 'View of Toledo' painted by El Greco showed a dreamlike view of Toledo with a dark lightning storm in the sky.

The trends in art portraying a natural setting expanded to the Americas and many of the pictures had the western canyons of the US. The art techniques of the past are still used today by artist. The new depictions show settings from lushness of South America to the beauty of Alaska.

Paintings by great artists such as Winslow Homer and Monet have been seen as timeless. They have beautiful depictions of nature in natural light. Landscape paintings like theirs have endured through expressionism and American Impressionism. Other artists as well, canvassed works that many love, such as Vincent van Gogh and Albert Pinkham Ryder.
